The first principle is a way of thinking for yourself. It is a fancy way of saying think like a scientist. First principle implies questioning every assumption you think you know about a role and constantly finding new ways to create a solution from the scratch.
But most people tend to reason based on analogy (doing things the way it has always been done or giving answers based on what they told you).
Elon Musk, the CEO of SpaceX, said: “Well, I do think there’s a good framework for thinking. It is physics. You know, the sort of first principles reasoning. Generally I think there are — what I mean by that is, boil things down to their fundamental truths and reason up from there, as opposed to reasoning by analogy. Through most of our life, we get through life by reasoning by analogy, which essentially means copying what other people do with slight variations.”
Albert Einstein also said; “If I had an hour to solve a problem, I’d spend 55 minutes thinking about the problem and 5 minutes thinking about solutions.”
First principle thinking involves breaking the problem into bits or assumptions, then creating unique solutions from the scratch.
First principle will make people more innovative and creative. If people had relied on the ancient form of communication, i guess phones would not have existed or horses would still be used as a major source of transportation. Always find out why things are done the way they are and find a way to make it better.
